Kenai Fishing in Alaska

Contributor By Carrie Simmons, eHow Contributing Writer

I want to do this!If you think of fishing in Alaska as the ice cream sundae of activities, fishing on the Kenai Peninsula is the cherry on top. This condensed region, about 60 miles wide and 75 miles long, offers well-stocked freshwater lakes and rivers, the adrenaline rush of the summer salmon run, and excellent, almost year-round, marine fishing.

Where to Fish on Kenai Peninsula:

1. The biggest and most easily accessible marine ports for saltwater fishing on the Kenai Peninsula are Homer for Cook Inlet, Seward for the Gulf of Alaska and Whittier for Prince William Sound. The Alaska Fish and Game department stocks most of the Kenai's freshwater lakes, which do freeze over during winter. Some of the larger lakes include Elephant Lake, Vagt Lake, Island Lake and Upper Summit Lake. Due to the introduction of the invasive Northern pike in some lakes, the Alaska Fish and Game department occasionally discontinues stocking. Find more information on the Kenai Area Stocked Lakes page in the Reference links below.

The rivers of Kenai Peninsula are packed with incredible fresh water fishing opportunities and can be fished most of the year. Upper Kenai River and Russian River are popular spots for fishing. You can arrange fishing trips in Cooper Landing.

Fishing Season on Kenai Peninsula:

2. Although there are fishing opportunities year-round in south and central Alaska, summer is the high season. During July and August the Kenai Peninsula is packed with fisherman and spectators watching the annual salmon run. Most species of salmon and trout hit their peak numbers in these months as well. Rockfish and king salmon last a bit longer with a peak season running of May to August. Halibut has an even longer fishing window, with a peak season of May to October. The waters of Prince William Sound have a slightly smaller peak season.

For more information on which fish are best at what times of year, visit the Department of Fish & Game's Sport Fish Run Timing Page in the Resource link below.

Salt Water Fish on Kenai Peninsula:

3. The Kenai Peninsula's marine fishing areas--Cook Inlet, Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska--are home to several species of salmon including king, coho and pink. Cook Inlet is known for its halibut fishing. Other marine fish to catch include rockfish and cod. Alaska Department of Fish & Game stocks these key marine areas with king salmon, pink salmon and red salmon as well as other fish.

Fresh Water Fish on Kenai Peninsula:

4. Freshwater fish in the streams and lakes on the Kenai Peninsula include Dolly Varden, steelhead trout, coho salmon, rainbow trout and Arctic char. The last three types of fish are stocked in lakes on the Kenai Peninsula by Alaska Fish and Game. Fisherman can fish from banks or boats. Cooper Landing has a lot of fishing rental and bait shops.

Fishing License in Alaska:

5. Visitors and residents who are 16 years and older are obligated to get a fishing license to fish on the Kenai Peninsula. Purchase permits from the Department of Fish & Game or local venues like motels, markets and bait shops. As of 2010, a one-year fishing license is $24 for residents and $145 for non-residents. Visitors to Alaska can get short term licenses for: one day ($20), three days ($35), seven days ($55) and 14 days ($80).

How to Fish in Manzanillo, Mexico

Contributor By Peter Mitchell, eHow Contributing Writer

I want to do this. Manzanillo fishermen covet the hard-fighting sailfish. Manzanillo lies on Mexico's west coast between Acapulco and Puerto Valarta. Every year hundreds of anglers head to Manzanillo to take part in the International Sailfish Tournament. In fact, the city is often referred to as the sailfish capital of the world, according to the "Smithsonian Magazine." The city has one of Mexico's busiest ports. Fishing is available throughout the year but things get particularly lively from November until March. Other targeted fish species in Manzanillo include snapper, dorado, tuna, yellowtail and sea bass.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Charter boat
  • Fishing gear

  • Step 1:

Time your visit to coincide with the peak fishing season. Visit in November for the annual sailfish tournament. Book accommodation and charter boat spots in advance if arriving in November.

  • Step 2:

Head down to the central dock and book a sports-fishing excursion with Flota Amarilla on Avenida Ninos Heroes. Run by the local tourist services department, this is the largest fleet of charter boats in the area. All boats leave from La Perlita pier.

  • Step 3:

Target sailfish for a sports-fishing adrenaline rush. Book a whole-day trip to maximize your chances of catching a sailfish. Hire equipment from charter boat companies or bring your own sturdy boat rod and bait-caster reel.

  • Step 4:

Ask to target other species, such as bonito, dorado and yellowtail, for a better chance of catching a fish.

  • Step 5:
Consider taking a small boat out to the reefs in the bay for some snapper fishing. Alternatively, try fishing the surf on Manzanillo beaches using a spinner rod or setting up a rig with squid or fish bait and a medium line weight.

  • Step 6:

Speak to local experts at the Sports Fishing Club of Mazanillo at the tip of the Playa San Pedrito. Ask for tips about productive baits.

Alaska Vacation: How to Plan your Trip Beforehand for Maximum Enjoyment

By: Henry Flicker

There are many people who do not know the hidden natural treasures of this wonderful place called Alaska. People, who have done some prior research on this place with the intention of undertaking an Alaska vacation, are familiar with the diversity and the variety of choices available over here. There are a diverse range of activities which can be performed, right from river rafting to skiing and fishing. Going alone on a trip is much simpler compared to taking an entire family along with you! Whenever there are children or elderly members involved proper planning becomes essential. With sufficient time and research you can ensure that none of your family members is deprived of the breathtaking experiences of the Alaskan wilderness.

Various modes of transport can be availed to reach Alaska and depending upon that the cost component of the Alaska vacation will also vary. Many cities like Juneau and Fairbanks are connected by air with the remaining part of the country. Varying durations of steamship cruiser lines are available and they provide an opportunity for getaway packages. The booking of the cruise liners can be done only after reaching the specific location (port) for departure and not beforehand. Different enthralling train trips are also present which can take you to various locations from Alaska. Another possible mode of communication is car, but whatever might be the mode you plan to choose, always have a map handy and listen to the local people regarding the climatic changes or warnings.

For those who are inclined towards ancient American history quite a few native art museums are present. In this regard it is worth mentioning that Native Americans have stayed in this region for a long period of time. For satiating your taste buds during an Alaska vacation you will have ample scope as a multitude of cuisine options are available at the resorts and the virgin locales. The choices range from the delectable tastes of an Asian dish to a nutritious and filling European menu. World famous zoos are present over here enabling you to get in touch with the diverse animal and bird breeds of Alaska. Marine creatures from surrounding places are also brought and carefully looked after at the giant aquariums.

Those who want some thrill in their lives can try out the adventurous activities like a climb to a glacier, canoeing across a tranquil lake or hiking a forest, all of which can be conveniently incorporated in an Alaska vacation package. For driving out to the adjacent areas one should always make arrangements for extra water and fuel as the number of convenience stores or rest stops are quite limited on the route. Travelers who do not want to go through the hassles of charting out a detailed itinerary can easily delegate the task to competent travel professionals who would take care of the logistics. Many scheduled escorted Alaska vacation tours are available which will facilitate you to focus your entire attention in soaking in the beauty of the pristine nature of Alaska.
